Lochbroom FM

Lochbroom FM
102.2 (Ullapool, Loch Broom) and 96.8 FM (Polbain)

Lochbroom FM is based in Ullapool on the north west Highlands of Scotland covering the Ullapool and Lochinver area. Lochbroom FM is a not for profit company with independent directors and around 20 volunteers.

A community radio association was formed in 1994 and initially went on air from a small tin shack with a transmission radius of 20 miles and the ‘midgie count’ in 1997. Lochbroom FM launched on 23 May 1997.

The present company, Lochbroom FM was formed when a new purpose built station was proposed. This was funded through a variety of grants and was opened in September 1998.

The transmission area increased north to cover Achillibui, Lochinver and south to Dundonnell and out across The Minch.

Lochbroom FM pre-dates Ofcom Community Licences and therefore holds a commercial radio ILR – Independent Local Radio licence. The main aim of the company is to provide a community radio service that fulfils the needs of the remote west coast area of Scotland.

Lochbroom FM’s programming schedule ranges from Scottish music hours, to dance mixes; a magazine programme with tips and discussion and an old favourite, the ‘Sunday Burach’.

The ‘midge count’ returns during summer season as the station welcomes the tourists to this wonderful area.

Lochbroom FM would like to share programmes with other local radio stations and try and offer opportunities for young people in our area to learn new skills in radio.
